Wayne Geary: How to Look at a Landscape Painting
Sun September 20, 2026 @ 1:00 pm – 4:00 pmEscalante, 84726
Cost: $35
Maximum 10 / Minimum 5 – All levels.
Why is a landscape painting more than just a depiction of scenery? How does an artist create the illusion of 3-D space on a flat canvas? What makes a good landscape painting “work”?
These are some of the questions we will be discussing in this workshop. Artist/educator Wayne Geary will be leading an exploration of these and other questions. Using a power point presentation, he will share a fascinating selection of landscape works from the past five hundred years. We will look at the underlying structure of a painting to see how artists create space and depth and how formal devices can unify a work. Viewing examples will range from realistic to more abstract styles. Included will be works by Claude Monet and Georgia O’Keefe as well as by lesser known but amazing artists like Emily Carr and Charles Burchfield.

Wayne Geary has been exploring- and painting- the canyons and mesas of the Southwest since the 1970’s. He has a BA in Art History from the University of Washington and an MFA in Painting from the University of Utah. He was the ECAF artist-in -residence in 2013. He divides his time between Escalante and Salt Lake City.
Workshop attendees will be encouraged to express their own thoughts about landscape painting, and hopefully we will have some interesting group discussions.
