Scott Geary & Wayne Geary: Slow Plein Air Painting (Three Day Workshop)
Mon September 14, 2026 @ 11:00 am – Wed September 16, 2026 @ 11:00 am
Cost: $275
Maximum of 12 / Minimum 6 – Workshop for serious intermediate to advanced painters.
Note: On the first day, September 14th at 10:00 am, we will meet in the Escalante Interagency Visitor Center parking lot for orientation. We will then caravan and carpool to our painting site. The workshop will run from 11:00 am until sunset, as late afternoon is prime time for painting as it has the best light conditions.
Rather than rushing to “capture the moment”, Slow Plein Air offers a more relaxed and thoughtful approach to landscape painting. This 3-day workshop’s two instructors, Scott and Wayne Geary, will emphasize looking – at both the subject and the painting – as a way of slowing down, to more deeply engage with the landscape and the painting expressing it.
We will be using tools that help the artist better understand the landscape, such as drawing multiple thumbnail sketches, taking notes on color, shadows and more.
We will work in the backcountry near Escalante – a land of fantastic beauty but no amenities. Detailed supply list will be forwarded upon registration. However, workshop attendees may choose to work in their medium of choice; watercolor, acrylic, oil or pastel.

There will be hands-on-demonstrations of painting techniques such as using broken color, glazing, and rag frottage. Hands-on demonstration materials will be supplied by the instructors.

Late Afternoon Escalante – Wayne Geary
In 1973, artist, Scott Geary “discovered” Utah’s Canyon Country. Since then, he’s returned almost every year to paint this remarkable landscape. Scott is a longtime participant of the festival and his paintings have earned multiple awards. In 2017 he was the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument’s Artist in Residence. Although landscape painting is his first love, Scott is best known in his hometown of Santa Fe, NM, for his large multi-media pieces on permanent display in immersive installations.

Wayne has been exploring and painting the canyons of the Southwest since the 1970’s. He holds a BA in Art History and an MFA in Painting. He is currently alternating between abstraction and landscape painting. He has worked in murals, ceramic tile, mosaics, but above all, watercolor and oil painting.
Wayne was the ECAF Artist-In-Residence in 2013. He currently divides his time between Salt Lake City and Escalante.
