SUMMARY:Louise Sackett: Palette and Various Approaches to a Limitless Landscape
DESCRIPTION:Free! \n\n\n\nNote: Meet at the park pavilion and carpool to location. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLouise primarily paints en plein air and works most often in oils\, which she will demonstrate. She also works in pastel and has worked in water media. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLouise will talk about the differences between opaque and transparent pigments\, and when and how to use them. She will further talk about handy little on the job theories/systems to think about such as order of operations in painting. Louise will demonstrate how to simplify and use shapes as the basis for great compositions\, giving handy concepts to aid in the design. Louise further intends to not have her entire box hit the dirt during setup\, but hey\, you never know!! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCome by and she will explain her palette and various approaches to a limitless landscape. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLouise Sackett is an award winning artist who has studied\, exhibited and taught on both coasts. She has been an artist her life long\, and was art director for a Navy squadron whose primary mission was flight and platform training. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLouise finds the endless variety of Utah’s topography a challenge that often results in differing approaches. It has been several years since Louise has been in Escalante and she looks forward to the wild colors\, rocky landscape and the opportunity to meet others sharing the same passion.

SUMMARY:Michael Keyes: Woodcut Printmaking\, “En Plein Air”
DESCRIPTION:Cost: $145. Note: Entrance to Petrified Forest State Park is included in the registration price. \n\n\n\n\n\n9:00a – 4:00p \n\n\n\nMaximum of 10 / Minimum of 3 – All ability levels \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe sensation of carving basswood plywood with razor-sharp Japanese gouges to produce a wood block for printing handsome prints is fulfilling and productive! The goal for this class is to produce a small edition of 5 woodcut prints\, carved and printed by each student. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nParticipants will be introduced to wood and paper types\, carving tools\, inks\, brayers\, and printing tools used in making woodcut prints.  We will discuss how to store and transport paper\, ink\, tools\, and equipment\, and how to make woodcut prints on site\, “en plein air.” \n\n\n\nWoodblocks\, ink\, paper\, and accessories will be supplied\, as well as carving tools to be lended for use. Participants must bring a 6” x 8” sketch or drawing as a reference for the woodcut print to be produced. To make a successful print\, the drawing needs to be made up of bold shapes\, and black lines need to be thick\, while white lines can be either thick\, or thin and delicate. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe instructor will demonstrate the steps to translate a black-and-white drawing into a dynamic woodcut print. The instructor will emphasize how to carve the block with shallow gouge marks\, ensuring the optimum control of the print appearance. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMichael Keyes is a woodcut printmaker and oil painter with a BFA from Wright State University\, and an MFA from Ohio State University. \n\n\n\nIn woodcut printmaking\, he is challenged by composing black and white shapes into active\, impactful images.  His woodcuts relay visual stories—either a simple story of a breathtaking landscape\, or a complex story of people helping people\, as in activities in early days of the Covid 19 pandemic. The addition of brisk color\, produced with oil-based inks\, brings a special liveliness to his works. \n\n\n\nHe teaches woodcut printmaking at Art Students League of Denver.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMichael was awarded “Best of Show” at the 2021 National Arts Program Front Range Exhibition\, and “First Place” in the Studio Work Category\, at the Escalante Canyons Art Festival in 2024\, among other recent awards. \n\n\n\nYou can see more of his artwork at MichaelKeyesArt.com \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister Now\n\n\n\n

DESCRIPTION:Mountain lions play a critical role in maintaining healthy ecosystems. As apex predators\, they help regulate deer populations\, reduce ecosystem imbalance\, and support biodiversity across landscapes.​ They play a key role in helping keep Utah wild. It’s known as the trophic cascade. SUMMARY:Dr. Jackie Grant: Bats of the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument
DESCRIPTION:Maximum of 15 / Minimum of 2 \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin Dr. Grant to learn about the variety of bats in the area and maybe even record some as they fly overhead to look for their insect dinners.  Dr. Nicki Frey\, professor of Human-Wildlife Interactions in the Department of Wildland Resources for Utah State University\, will partner with Dr. Jackie Grant to teach participants about the variety of bats that call the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument their home. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nThe program will be conducted at the Grand Staircase Escalante Partners Office located at 530 W Main St. Escalante\, UT 84726.  We will meet on the back patio. \n\n\n\nBring a portable chair if you want to sit\, warm clothing\, and comfort items such as water and snacks. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDid you know that at least 14 bat species make their home on the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument? Bats navigate and find food with their very loud “shouts.” Each type of bat has its own special shout\, which\, despite being very loud\, is not heard by humans. However\, we can use special microphones to hear the bats then identify each bat by the sound it makes. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDr. Jackie Grant taught biology and environmental science at Southern Utah University for 12 years before joining Grand Staircase Escalante Partners in 2024. She is the President of the Utah Native Plant Society and served as the Vice President for Education and Outreach for the Society for Conservation Biology. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDr. Grant’s expertise is in wildlife\, native plants\, and the Seeds of Success Protocol. Dr. Grant was a Fulbright Scholar to New Zealand in 2023\, where she learned about seed preservation from an Indigenous (Māori) perspective. DESCRIPTION:Walking tour of Escalante’s historic buildings. \n\n\n\nNo RSVP needed. \n\n\n\nFree \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTour begins at the Peoples Exchange\, one of Escalante’s most photographed historic buildings. Come along to learn more about many of the historic structures throughout town. Escalante was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2013 as a National Historic District with areas of noted significance in architecture\, social history\, commerce\, agriculture\, and exploration/settlement.   \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTour will be led by Dr. Larry Barnes\, co-owner of the Peoples Exchange\, an early (1901) co-op store on old Main Street\, Escalante. His interest in Escalante history has led to several invitations to give lectures and to assist in preparation of the guide to the Escalante National Historic District.

DESCRIPTION:The Art Exhibit and Sale is the highlight of the festival and showcases artwork submitted for all competition categories. Each year\, artists compete in the Plein Air\, Studio Work and Junior categories. The festival mixes it up each year with possible Nocturne\, Miniature\, Drawing and Abstract competitions. \n\n\n\nThe exhibit typically includes more than 200 entries in oil\, pastel\, watercolor\, and other mixed media\, many of which have been produced during the days leading up to the show. \n\n\n\nBe sure to visit the Overflow Sales tent where artists offer non-competition paintings for sale. Each artist can offer three concurrent paintings – keep your eye on what is available throughout the day!

SUMMARY:Jill Simkins: Mosaic Wall Art
DESCRIPTION:A mosiac artwork is a handmade tradition of using small colored stones that dates back thousands of years to the Ancient Greek and Roman era. They constructed elaborate wall decorations and geometric designs in flooring and pathways. Modern mosaics are created  with all kinds of materials. Buttons\, shells\, charms\, beads\, broken pottery\, ceramic plates\, and costume jewelry. \n\n\n\nAn 8”x 6” board\, adhesive\, grout\, and bits and pieces of glass and pottery will be provided. Living her life working outside in the soil and discovering this beautiful world by hiking\, backpacking\, catering horse-pack trips in the High Uintah’s\, river rafting\, or camping in her vintage trailer\, has given her a great respect and love for the outdoors\, which she attempts to capture on canvas. Using a primary palette Suzanne will guide you through a composition and block on layers of color. Learn color mixing and enjoy the process. \n\n\n\nInterior design\, decorative arts\, and painting have been Suzanne’s focus for many years. She transitioned to plein air and studio painting in 2008\, and began art instruction as an assistant and docent for her children’s school where she developed new lessons and taught all grade levels. Suzanne is the founder of the Art GAP and is a regular contributing artist for area programs like Arts Alive\, Hands On Art\, Adventures in Art\, and other offerings of the South Bay Art Alliance. In 2025 she became an instructor for the Orange County Art Group and continues to host plein air workshops along the California Coast. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSuzanne is a California impressionist painter. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOriginally from Preston\, England\, she calls southern California home. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSuzanne enjoys that plein air pairs nicely with travel\, and she finds opportunities to paint and teach in new locations. The first hour we will talk about short fiction and choose the painting we will write from. The second hour we will write our story\, integrating character\, setting\, conflict\, plot and theme from our painting. The last hour we will read our stories and talk about the readings. This is a magical way to work!  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWestern Interiors \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“…It was as if suddenly the sky and cliffs were bound to these men whose ancestors had stood in the same spot\, three hundred years before\, when there were no weathermen to explain the way and why the violent sky moved…” \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease bring a computer or notebook\, and a cell phone with a camera if possible. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRaymond King Shurtz has written more than 30 plays\, three published with Samuel French and Anchorage Press/Dramatic Publishing. The Founding Artistic Director of Playwright’s Workshop Theatre in Phoenix\, Raymond produced eighty new plays in his 12-year tenure with the company. In 1998\, he began teaching\, theatre\, film and humanities at Metro Arts\, a high school for the performing and visual arts in Phoenix\, Arizona\, where he taught and produced another ten years of new theatre. His play\, Blue Baby\, A Memoir won the Playwriting Fellowship in 2003 from the Arizona Commission on the Arts. Since 2008\, he has worked as a free-lance director\, actor\, writer\, and musician.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn 2009\, Raymond produced and performed his one man show\, Bohemian Cowboy at The Elephant Theatre\, which was the ‘pick of the week’ in The LA Weekly\, and subsequently performed it approximately seventy-five times in Los Angeles\, San Francisco\, Salt Lake City\, Southern Utah\, and twenty-three shows in Austin\, Texas. He also fronts a country/rock/western band\, Out on Bail\, and also performs solo acoustic shows for Hilton Hotels. His Anthology\, ‘Seven Plays of the American West’ was released in 2019 by Five Sisters Press. Participants will design and build their very own gourd birdhouse\, perfect for welcoming feathered friends to the yard. \n\n\n\nEach student will select a gourd from a variety of sizes and shapes\, then carefully clean and prepare it for its new life as a birdhouse. With guided instruction\, students will use drills (with supervision) to create the entrance\, wire hanger holes\, and ventilation holes. \n\n\n\nTo finish\, participants can personalize their birdhouse with a rich stain and decorative artistic touches. By the end of class\, everyone will leave with a one-of-a-kind gourd birdhouse ready to hang and enjoy at home. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTera Connor is a retired elementary school teacher who has grown into a passionate gourd gardener and artisan. Gardening in Sandy Valley\, Nevada\, she carefully harvests and dries her own gourds\, transforming them into beautiful\, functional pieces. \n\n\n\nWith a deep love for repurposing and crafting\, Tera has spent the past 15 years creating handcrafted gourd birdhouses. You are welcome to paint with them or just observe the demos. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHope Ricciardi \n\n\n\nAfter 45+ years as a Boston artist and teacher of various media\, Hope now focuses on paintings of Southwest landscapes. Her impressionist style is in oils on canvas or panels with an emphasis on the extraordinary energy and light of the Red Rocks\, Grand Canyon and beyond. In 2023\, Hope participated in the Escalante Canyons Art Festival\, winning the Plein Air Purchase Award for her painting\, First Impression. Other awards include First Place at the Plein Air on the Santa Cruz\, first place at the ORO Valley Plein Air Competition. She is a member of American Impressionist Society\, Arizona Plein Air Painters\, Outdoor Painters Society\, Laguna Plein Air Painters and Paint Arizona Day.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn 2025\, she juried the Escalante Arts Festival with Jim Wodark\, and taught a workshop. He is faculty at UNLV and led the Latin Ensemble to six Downbeat Awards. He founded the Jazz Club at the Dispensary Lounge and Vegas Records. He has shared the stage with hundreds of famous artists. He has released eight CD’s as leader\, and been presenting his Trio with their CD Long Way Home. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBorn in 1994\, Raymond Jeremiah “RJ” Reyes is from Las Vegas\, NV\, and currently residing in Los Angeles\, CA.  He began his professional career\, at 16\, playing in venues around Las Vegas. He developed a technical prowess on the electric and upright basses along with a distinguishable sound.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nKnown for his versatility in different musical styles\, Jose Pepe Jimenez’ musical journey has taken him to the most prestigious stages around the world. He is a product of the Escuela Libre De Musica (Puerto Rico Performing Arts School)\, Musicians Institute of Technology and Puerto Rico Conservatory of Music.
