What’s “plein air”?
“En plein air” is a French expression which means “in the open air” and is used to describe the act of painting outdoors.
What is there to paint in this area?
The plein air competition allows painting in a three county region of south central Utah. You will find stunningly colorful sandstone canyons, high-elevation coniferous forests, small pastoral communities surrounded by agricultural fields, and pre-historic and historic architecture from native cultures and pioneers.
What type vehicle do I need?
The Escalante area is accessed via Scenic Byway 12, a paved single-lane scenic highway. There are numerous painting opportunities accessible along or just off paved routes. If you prefer to paint in more remote locations, an AWD high-clearance vehicle will allow you more options.
What is the weather like in late September?
The average daytime temperatures are in the 80s and the average evening temperatures are in the 40s. Though rain is not common in late September, it is possible.
Can I purchase art supplies in Escalante?
There are no art supply stores in Escalante. The nearest of these are more than two hours away in Cedar City.
