I have been in several Michael Keyes’ woodcut block printing and drawing classes for at least two years. Michael is a patient and inspiring teacher, very easy to get along, knows his materials. His classes are serious fun. They bring out the best in his students. And Michael’s art is so well done and expressive – it’s just a pleasure to be with it. – recent workshop participant

Goal: for participants to produce an edition of 5 black and white fine-art woodcut prints from their sketch or drawing.

Instruction: Participants will be introduced to wood and paper types, carving tools, inks, brayers, and printing tools used in making woodcut prints.  We will discuss how to store and safely transport paper, ink, tools, and equipment so that they can set up shop in an outside location temporarily, in order to make woodcut prints “en plein air” (weather-dependent).  This workshop will be held indoors.

Along the way, we will discuss sharpening and honing carving tools, the effects of hardness and porosity of wood, mixing oil-based ink to proper consistency, proper application of ink to the woodblock, hand-printing techniques to achieve desired results, and techniques to repair mistakes.  We will also briefly discuss multi-block color prints, and color/reduction woodcut prints.

Participants must bring a sketch or drawing as a reference for the woodcut print to be produced.

Woodblocks, ink, paper, and accessories are included in the fee and carving tools will be provided for use. Instructor will have additional woodblocks and sheets of paper available for sale.

Michael Keyes is a painter and woodcut printmaker and received his BFA Degree from Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio, and an MFA from Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio.  His areas of specialty are drawing, painting, and printmaking.

He enjoys the tactile sensation of carving blocks of wood, developing the dramatic starkness of imagery in prints made from them. The woodcut prints range from-black-and-white, colored multi-block, or hand-colored prints. The subject matter of the prints includes landscapes, rural and urban scenes and events, and domestic life scenes.

He is a member of Park Hill Art Club, Aurora Artists Guild, Art Students League of Denver, and Red Delicious Press, and volunteers at the children’s after school art program at DAVA (Downtown Aurora Visual Arts).  He has exhibited in numerous juried exhibitions in the greater Denver area, as well as having several one-person exhibitions.
