Bo Earls: Flint Knapping
September 28 @ 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm
One event on September 29, 2018 at 2:00pm
Bo Earls moved to Utah in 1996 from South Carolina to attend college at Utah Valley State College in Orem, Utah. While visiting Moab in 1999, Bo noticed finely crafted arrowheads, arrows, and knives for sale in many of the stores. Being the ‘thrifty” person that Bo is, he decided to learn how to make his own modern lithic replications rather than pay for a piece that someone had made. Fifteen years later, Bo is now an experienced knapper whom still considers himself an amateur of the skill.
In February of 2005, Bo decided to share his knowledge with anyone who shared his desire and fascination with primitive skills such as knapping. That is how the Utah Valley Knapping Association came to be. He currently has a tough time just keeping up with the demand for his most notable pieces such as hafted knives and western style clovis points. That is why in June of this year, he decided to retire from his real job and flint-knap full time. You can now find him at shows all across the four corners region and surrounding states, with a table of his wares and a tarp full of flakes from the demos he gives to anyone who wants to see his craft.
Most notably, Bo’s work currently resides on display at multiple museums & state parks all across Southern Utah. His work has even been on movies such as the Twilight Series and a handful of instructional videos.
